Description: You draw the soul from a dead or dying creature and imprison it in a black sapphire gem. If the target is dying, it gets a Wisdom save, otherwise it dies and its soul is captured. If dead, it gets no save, but the target must have been dead no more than 1 round per caster level. The stolen soul remains in the gem until the gem is destroyed, the magic on the gem is dispelled, or the creature's soul is returned to a body through clone, reincarnation, resurrection, wish, or miracle.
While bound, the soul can be exploited in a number of ways. This requires a DC 20 arcana check for anyone besides you to do. After each exploitation, roll d6. On a 1, the soul is exhausted, the gem crumbles, and the spell ends.
Soul gems may have other uses as well--as replacements for magical components, for the creation of intelligent magic items, or for sale to evil outsiders, an act which is unequivocally evil in nature
Leveling: At level 9, the soul, once trapped in the gem, cannot be returned through any means, even true resurrection, wish, or miracle. Only by destroying the gem or dispelling the spell on the gem can one free the soul (which is then still dead). At this level, you may speak with dead indefinitely without issues. Any other uses still require a roll to see if the gem is exhausted. To cast Soul Bind as level 9, you need a black sapphire worth at least 2,000 gp.
