QUALITIES

Power Attack (ex) - A Black Dragon (Very Old) may choose to take a penalty to its attack roll (up to -5). For each point of penalty, the Black Dragon (Very Old) does one extra point of damage. The Black Dragon (Very Old) must decide to use power attack at the beginning of its turn and it applies to all attack made until the start of its next turn.

Water Breathing (ex) - The creature can breathe under water.

Swamp Stride (ex) - This creature can move through difficult terrain at full speed in swamps.

Speak with Reptiles (sp) - This creature has the ability to speak with reptiles. This functions like speak with animals, but is limited to repiles.

ACTIONS
Attacks

Crush (ex) - This dragon can land on foes as a standard action, using its whole body to crush them. Crush attacks are effective only against opponents three or more size categories smaller than the dragon. A crush attack affects as many creatures as fit in the dragon's space. Creatures in the affected area must succeed on a Dex save or take bludgeoning damage and become grappled (level 2). Crush attacks deal damage equal to the maximum melee attack the dragon can make. Grappled targets automatically take this damage again at the beginning of their turns for as long as they remain grappled.

Corrupt Water (sp, 1/day) - Once per day this dragon can stagnate 10 cubic feet of still water, making it foul and unable to support water-breathing life. The ability spoils liquids containing water. Liquid-based magic items (such as potions) and items in a creature's possession must succeed on a WIS save or become ruined. This ability is the equivalent of a 1st-level spell. Its range is equal to that of the dragon's frightful presence.

Frightful Presence (Free)(ex, Mental, Fear) - As a free action, this creature can demonstrate its frightful presence (usually through a roar or other effect). Opponents who witness this gain level 3 fear for 5d6 rounds. Opponents who succeed on a save are immune to this effect for 24 hours. If the target loses sight of the creature, it gets a new save each round.

Vital Strike (ex) - As a standard action, the Black Dragon (Very Old) can make one attack at full bonus that deals additional damage. Roll the damage from the attack twice before adding other damage bonuses. This extra weapon damage is not multiplied on a critical hit but is still added to the total.

Breath Weapon (su, Acid, every 1d4 rounds) - 100-ft. line of acid, 18d6 acid damage

DESCRIPTION

Environment: warm marshes

Organization: None

Treasure: triple

Hissing green acid drips from the fanged maw of this black-scaled, horned dragon.

Lording over the darkest swamps and marshes, black dragons are the undisputed masters of their domain, ruling through cruelty and intimidation. Those who dwell within a black dragon's reach live in fear. Black dragons tend to make their lairs in remote parts of the swamp, preferably in caves at the bottom of dark and fetid pools. Inside, they pile up their filthy treasure and sleep amid the roots and muck. Black dragons prefer their food a bit rotten and will often allow a meal to sit in a pool for days before consuming it. Black dragons prefer treasures that do not rot or decay, making their hoard, full of coins, gemstones, jewelry, and other objects made from stone or metal.
